The aim of this project, coordinated by UKIGCN’s Nepal Action Group, is to improve radiotherapy for children with cancer in Nepal. The main objective is to ensure that in future, children with cancer in Nepal will be treated by a Clinical Oncologist who has received specific training in paediatric radiotherapy. A secondary objective is to develop a national network of Clinical Oncologists who will drive paediatric radiotherapy forward in Nepal.
8 Nepalese Clinical Oncologists were chosen to participate in the training programme, which began in May this year. The first phase of the programme, a didactic virtual course, was run jointly by the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) and the Christie Hospital in Manchester from May to July 2024.
During this period, UKIGCN organised a weekly tutorial with the participants to consolidate the learning. The next stage of the project is a one-month fellowship in paediatric radiotherapy in Ireland or the UK, so that participants can gain hands-on practical experience in a supervised setting.
